Growing up, I loved it when I dad would read to me. My favorite book was ‘Only You Can Save Mankind’ by Terry Pratchett. I was thinking about it one day and I decided it would be fun to try to remake the cover using Adobe Illustrator. This was back when I was first getting comfortable with the software. It took me about 4 hours to complete this project. At the time, I was extremely proud of myself, but now I think I could have gotten it done faster.

I wanted to copy the original cover as much as possible, and unfortunately that meant making a few design choices that I normally wouldn’t. Let me be honest, the typography is AWFUL. I absolutely hate it. But I guess that’s what happens when you create something based on a book from the early 90s.

Even though I was creating a flat design, I wanted to preserve the 3D aspect of the illustration. This was done by emphasizing all the shadows and highlights featured in the image.

I think the funnest part of creating this was working with the lights. In order to create a semi-realistic effect (despite the flat style), I layered a yellow color over the white in areas that would be somewhat darker. Basically, the edges of the beams of light and the casing around the lights on the ship.

Working with the shadows was a lot of fun, too. I had just been introduced to the shape building tool (the BEST tool there is), and it made creating the shadows A LOT easier. I was able to make sure each piece of the ship was consistent with it’s oblong shape.
